Common
Mistakes to Avoid
Avoid
buying everything that is “cute.” It
is better to buy supplies for a specific project no matter how cute the little
embellishment is. It may never get
used. Your style of scrapbooking
may change too, as you learn to scrapbook.
Buying
a lot of stuff before you get started will be overwhelming to you.
Get your basic supplies and make a few simple pages.
Then start shopping with the project in mind.
Buying
a lot of supplies before you have a place to store them.
Even as a beginner you need to have a place to keep your supplies.
Buy an organizer that will grow with you.
One of the best places I found was Big Lots.
I bought three, 3-drawer (plastic) cabinets for $7.99 each.
Plus, they are stackable.
Don’t
immediately subscribe to every scrapbooking magazine there is.
I did! It was to the point
where I never looked at them and I actually couldn’t wait for the subscription
to run out. Now I only subscribe to
one … ok… two.
Stay
on top of your scrapbooking supplies so you don’t forget what you have and
purchase again and again. I try
(yeah, right) to go through my scrapbooking area at least once a month.
It annoys me when I run across that “perfect” embellishment I could
have used on a recent page but didn’t realize I had it.
I also go through my things and get rid of items I thought I really
needed to have! “Have” and “use” are two different things!
Do
not use recycled paper for scrapbooking as it is not archival quality.
Besides, you can use coupons to purchase paper that will probably be less
than what you would pay for the recycled paper.
It
is advisable not to use products like glue sticks, rubber cement or paper cement
as your adhesive. They actually dry
out, become brittle with age and your items will pop off the page.
